Preparing for Purim with Homemade Candy
March 9, 2011
With Purim right around the corner it is the perfect time to start making homemade treats to give to friends and family in their Mishloach Manot. Hamentashen, of course, are the traditional cookie to put in mishloach manot, but since mishloach manot are not considered complete until they have two different types of food that leaves room for all kinds of creativity. (Not that you can’t be creative with hamentashen filling too. Try flavors like peanut butter chocolate and cranberry white chocolate to shake things up a bit). Candy seems like the logical accompaniment to the hamentashen, which makes me happy because candy is my favorite thing to make (and eat)!
Last year I gave out homemade marshmallows and hot chocolate mix, but this year I am going with an assortment of different candies (still to be determined). I may be giving out a selection of citrus curds as well. It all depends on how much time I have in the next week and a half. I always have elaborate plans for what I want to make and then reality sets in and I have to modify the plans to fit in with the actual number of hours in a day. I have hopes of making filled molded chocolates, but that may be wishful thinking with a two month old baby. We will have to see.
If you missed it last week, check out my article on candy making on the kosher.com blog. The raspberry lemonade marshmallows, cocoa nib brittle and caramelized rice crispy bark would definitely make welcome additions to any goody bag.
